Academic term dates for 2024-25 to 2026-27
Following consultation we are pleased to advised that the term dates for 2024-25 to 2026-27 have now been published and can be found on our website here. All schools in the borough are encouraged to adopt these dates, as we have worked closely with our neighbouring local authorities to achieve alignment across the local areas as much as possible, in order to minimise disruption to our schools and families.
Free BBC micro:bits available for primary schools
This is a BBC Education campaign that aims to improve computing skills in 8 – 11 year olds. To this end we are giving away a free classroom set of BBC micro:bits to every primary school in the UK, these will be accompanied by a set of learning resources we are releasing in September to be used in the classroom.
We have noticed that many of the schools in your borough have not signed up and we would hate for them to miss out! To register all they need to do is visit BBC micro:bit – the next gen and follow the link to sign up.
Teachers will also be supported by teacher training and a suite of cross-curricular teaching resources alongside inspiring classroom activities to get children coding. To find out more about training go to https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/microbit/training-resources/zkf2p9q.
BBC micro:bit the next gen aims to empower primary school children aged 8 – 11 with the digital skills to understand the world around them and shape their own digital future. The micro:bit is an easy to use, pocket sized computer, that can be used as part of the Computing programme of study and across the wider curriculum.
BBC micro:bit–the next gen, is a new partnership between BBC Education, The Micro:bit Educational Foundation and Nominet and is donating a set of 30 micro:bits to every primary school across the UK that registers to receive them.
Given the importance placed on digital literacy, safety and wellbeing in the Computing and PSHE curriculums and as these are some of the issues that we will be covering in our resources, we hoped this might be something that you would be interested in letting the teachers and schools you work with know about.
Over half of the primary schools in the UK have already signed up, and we’d hate for others to miss out! If you are able to help promote this, we’d really appreciate any help towards getting the word out to schools. I have provided some suggested copy below for any newsletters that you have and would be happy to craft an email for you to send out to teachers or parents as relevant.

We are currently awaiting DfE guidelines resulting from the pilot study before we can finalise information.
Edsential Lotc will be offering a package to support schools with the implementation of this new curriculum.
D & AHT Newsletter June 2023
In the June D & AHT Newsletter are details of the meetings and training for the remainder of this year and also for the autumn term. In addition I have included information about DfE NPQ’s – there continues to be funding in 2023-2024.

Please do come along to the last Deputy & Assistant Headteacher Network Meeting for this year (Tuesday 27th June @ 3:30 – 5pm at the DCBL Stadium). Our focus will be: Ensuring that all children (including SEND) can access the whole curriculum and are able to achieve and make progress. We will be looking at English & maths curricula through the SEND lens.
