flu vaccine

As the weather turns colder, respiratory viruses spread more easily and usually reach their peak over the festive and new year period. The best way that people can protect themselves from catching respiratory diseases is as follows:

  • Anyone clinically at risk should receive the flu vaccine where possible. Please find out more at Flu vaccine – NHS.
  • The NHS recommendation is for those living with immunocompromised people to receive a flu vaccine.  The vaccine should also be offered to household contacts who expect to share living accommodation on most days over the winter and therefore for whom continuing close contact is unavoidable (Chapter 19, Green Book).
  • Encourage all individuals, particularly those with signs and symptoms of a respiratory infection to follow respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette, specifically, to:
  • cover nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing and sneezing, dispose of used tissue in a waste bin, and clean hands
  • cough or sneeze into the inner elbow (upper sleeve) if no tissues are available, rather than into the hand
  • keep contaminated hands away from their eyes, mouth and nose
  • clean hands after contact with respiratory secretions and contaminated objects and materials

Educational resources for schools

To minimise the spread of infectious diseases in school we recommend that you education your pupils on why respiratory hygiene is so important. Free resources (including lesson plan & activities) to support this have been developed by UKHSA with teachers for ages 3 to 16 and are available at e-bug.eu.
