Learning to Problem-Solve, Y2 – Y6 Mathematics

Dear Colleagues

The North West Learning Partnership is working in collaboration with Gareth Metcalfe ‘I See Maths’ to bring you the following training programme starting in January 2021.

In this project, pairs of teachers from 8 schools will develop the teaching of problem-solving in line with EEF guidance (point 3, solving problems). Gareth will look at how to make problem-solving accessible for all children; he will consider the use of visual representations and worked examples to help children understand the deep structure of problems; participants will develop techniques for improving children’s meta-cognition and self-regulation when problem-solving.

A range of free resources and activities from different sources will be shared with participants. This will include the resources ‘I See Problem-Solving LKS2’ and ‘I See Problem-Solving UKS2’. Teachers will also develop their ability to create open-ended questions in different areas of the maths curriculum.

The training is comprised of four half-day sessions. Every session will be attended by the maths leader and one other teacher. For two of the sessions, the content of the training will focus on Y2 or Y3 so it is advised that a Y2 or Y3 teacher attends alongside the maths leader. For two of the sessions, the content of the training will focus on Y4 – Y6 so it is advised that a Y4 – Y6 teachers attends alongside the maths leader.

Gap tasks will be set between each session. As an outcome from this project, each school will create their own policy for developing the teaching of problem-solving. Participants will plan and deliver CPD within their schools.
