Measles update – including how to protect children and adults from measles

Sent on behalf of the Public Health team.

As you will have seen in the news, the number of children with measles has been rising rapidly in England since the autumn, with hundreds of people catching measles – mainly in the West Midlands. Measles is now spreading to the North West, and several people in Greater Manchester have been diagnosed with measles since the start of February. This means that it is very likely that we will soon see measles in Halton.

We have put together information about measles, the MMR vaccination and what to look out for, which can be found here

Measles is highly infectious, and most people who catch measles become very unwell, with many people admitted to hospital. Measles can be especially serious for babies and young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immunity.

It’s really important that if you think you have symptoms of measles that you stay at home and phone your GP or NHS 111 for advice.

Protect against measles with MMR vaccination

The MMR vaccination is the best way to protect children and adults from measles. It is really important that children receive two doses of MMR vaccine to ensure that they are protected.

If your child has not had two doses of MMR vaccination, contact your GP practice as soon as possible to arrange for them to be vaccinated.

Educational settings and children’s services

Schools and Early Years settings have already received information about what educational settings can do to prepare for measles.

If your service works with children and families, please share any resources which are provided on measles and MMR vaccination. Please encourage and support parents and carers to access MMR vaccination, and to be aware of measles symptoms and what to do if their child has measles.

Please cascade this message to colleagues who do not have access to email.

Start Small; Dream Big

Start Small; Dream Big – a free career-related learning programme for Primary Schools

First come first served so please review as soon as possible – thank you

‘Start Small; Dream Big’ is a free career-related learning programme for primary schools, delivered by The Careers & Enterprise Company and backed by the Department for Education (DfE).

Please see attached

Why is it so important?

The programme holds huge importance for the future of careers education. It gives schools the opportunity to be part of an innovative national programme of activity and research, influencing and shaping future policy decisions on primary career-related learning.

Through participation in this programme, career-related learning and skills development will become embedded into curriculum teaching, leading to an enhanced curriculum that will impact the learning outcomes for all.

What will the programme enable?

Some of the many benefits of the programme include:

  • Increased awareness and aspirations amongst primary aged children of the range of jobs and career pathways available to them in the future.
  • Removal of barriers and stereotypes which limit children’s thinking about their future careers.
  • Provide children forward-looking, realistic views of the jobs and the way we work.
  • Develop understanding amongst children of the link between what they learn in school, skills and the world of work.
  • Increased parental engagement in supporting children to think broadly about future careers.

In addition to the benefits offered to young people, teaching staff will receive free development of skills through a programme of structured CPD and support led by Teach First.

To learn more about the programme, or to register your expression of interest – please contact Gill Wood. The CPD begins mid-April 2024 therefore we would like schools confirmed by mid-March 2024.
